How SaveMyService Sets Up Your Domain's DNS for Email

When you sign up for custom-domain email hosting with us, your domain needs a few specific DNS records pointed at our mail servers so email can actually find its way to your mailbox. Here's how that works.

What we do for you

In almost all cases, we set up the required DNS records for you when we configure your email hosting — you don't need to touch anything yourself. At minimum, we configure:

  • MX (Mail Exchanger) records — tell the internet which servers handle incoming mail for your domain.

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework) record — tells other mail servers which systems are allowed to send email on behalf of your domain.

For many domains we also add a DMARC record, which builds on SPF to give receiving mail servers guidance on how to handle messages that fail authentication.

If you manage your own DNS

If your domain's DNS is hosted somewhere we don't manage, we'll provide you with the exact records to add. Just reach out and we'll walk you through it — the specific values depend on your setup, so we'd rather confirm them with you directly than have you guess.

Sending email through other services too

Some customers also send mail from their domain through Gmail, a marketing platform, or another outside service in addition to using us for hosting. That's supported, but it needs to be set up carefully so both systems are authorized to send on your domain's behalf. We handle this on a case-by-case basis — let us know what other service you're using and we'll get the records configured correctly.
