Android (Gmail App or Samsung Email) - How to Connect Your Email Account via IMAP

Overview

This guide walks you through adding your email account to an Android phone or tablet using IMAP. IMAP keeps your messages synchronized between the server and all your devices, so anything you read, send, or file on your Android device is reflected in webmail and on your computer too.

Android phones ship with different default mail apps depending on the manufacturer. This guide covers the two most common:

  • Gmail app — installed on virtually every Android device. Recommended.
  • Samsung Email app — pre-installed on most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets.

The server settings are the same regardless of which app you use.

Before you begin

Have the following ready:

  • Your Android phone or tablet running a current version of Android
  • Your full email address (for example, yourname@usgo.net)
  • Your email account password
  • An active Wi-Fi or cellular connection

The Gmail app can manage non-Gmail accounts in addition to your Google account.

Step 1 — Open the Gmail App and Start Adding an Account

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap your profile picture (or initial) in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Add another account.

Step 2 — Choose “Other”

  1. On the “Set up email” screen, tap Other at the bottom of the list.
  2. Enter your full email address and tap Next.
  3. When asked “What type of account is this?”, tap Personal (IMAP).
  4. Enter your password and tap Next.

Step 3 — Incoming Server Settings

On the Incoming server settings screen:

  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password
  • Server: mail.usgo.net

Tap Next. If you see fields for port or security type, set Port to 993 and Security type to SSL/TLS.

Step 4 — Outgoing Server Settings

On the Outgoing server settings screen:

  • Make sure Require signing in is turned On.
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password
  • SMTP server: mail.usgo.net
  • Port: 465
  • Security type: SSL/TLS

Tap Next. Gmail will verify the settings — this can take a minute.

Step 5 — Account Options

  1. Choose how often you want Gmail to check for new mail (Every 15 minutes is a good default).
  2. Leave Notify me when email arrives turned on if you want push-style alerts.
  3. Tap Next.
  4. On the final screen, enter the name you want recipients to see (for example, “Jane Smith”) and an account label (for example, “Work Email”).
  5. Tap Next to finish.

Step 6 — Send a Test Message

  1. In Gmail, tap your profile picture and switch to the new account.
  2. Tap the Inbox — messages should begin to load.
  3. Compose a test email to yourself (or to another address you can check) to confirm both sending and receiving are working.

Option B — Set Up with the Samsung Email App

Use this section if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet and prefer the built-in Samsung Email app.

Step 1 — Open Samsung Email and Add an Account

  1. Open the Email app (it has a blue envelope icon labeled “Email”).
  2. If this is your first account, you’ll be taken straight to the setup screen.
  3. Otherwise, tap the menu (three lines) → Settings → Add account.

Step 2 — Enter Your Email and Password

  1. On the “Add new account” screen, choose Other.
  2. Enter your full email address and password.
  3. Tap Manual Setup (don’t use Sign In, which often picks the wrong settings).
  4. Choose IMAP account.

Step 3 — Incoming Server Settings

  • Email address: your full email address
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password
  • IMAP server: mail.usgo.net
  • Security type: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 993

Tap Sign In or Next to continue.

Step 4 — Outgoing Server Settings

  • SMTP server: mail.usgo.net
  • Security type: SSL/TLS
  • Port: 465
  • Require authentication to send emails: On
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password

Tap Sign In or Next. Samsung Email will verify the settings — this can take a minute.

Step 5 — Finish Setup

  1. Choose your sync frequency (Every 15 minutes is a good default).
  2. Enter your display name (what recipients see) and an account label.
  3. Tap Done.

Step 6 — Send a Test Message

Open the Inbox to confirm messages load, then send a test email to yourself (or to another address you can check) to confirm both sending and receiving are working.

Troubleshooting

“Couldn’t open connection to server” or login fails repeatedly

  • Double-check that your username is your full email address, not just the part before the @.
  • Confirm your password by signing in to webmail. If webmail works but your phone doesn’t, the password is correct and the issue is in the app’s settings.
  • Confirm Security type is SSL/TLS and Port is 993.

“Couldn’t send message” / message stuck in Outbox

  • Open the account settings and re-check the SMTP section. The most common cause is Require sign-in being off, or a blank username/password.
  • Confirm Security type is SSL/TLS and Port is 465.
  • Some cellular carriers or Wi-Fi networks block port 465. If you suspect this, try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular to confirm. Contact our support team if the issue persists.

Server certificate warning

  • Confirm the server name is spelled correctly (mail.usgo.net). If it is, tap Continue or Trust to accept the certificate.

App keeps prompting for your password

  • Gmail app: tap your profile picture → Manage accounts on this device → your email account, then re-enter the password.
  • Samsung Email: open menu → Settings → your account, then tap each server section and re-enter the password.

Where to change settings later

  • Gmail app: profile picture → Manage accounts on this device → your account → Account settings → Server settings.
  • Samsung Email: menu (three lines) → Settings → your account → Server settings.

If you’ve completed these steps and are still unable to connect, please contact our support team and include:

  • The exact error message you’re seeing (a screenshot is ideal)
  • Your email address (never your password)
  • Your device model and Android version (Settings → About phone → Software information)
  • Which mail app you’re using (Gmail, Samsung Email, or other)
