iPhone or iPad - How to Connect Your Email Account via IMAP

Overview

This guide walks you through adding your email account to the built-in Mail app on an iPhone or iPad using IMAP. IMAP keeps your messages synchronized between the server and all your devices, so anything you read, send, or file on your iPhone or iPad is reflected in webmail and on your computer too.

Before you begin

Have the following ready:

  • Your iPhone or iPad running a current version of iOS or iPadOS
  • Your full email address (for example, yourname@usgo.net)
  • Your email account password
  • An active Wi-Fi or cellular connection

Server Settings (Quick Reference)

Use these settings any time iOS asks for server information.

SMTP — Outgoing Mail

SettingValue

Step 1 — Open Mail Account Settings

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Mail. (On older iOS versions, tap Mail directly from the main Settings list.)
  3. Tap Mail Accounts.
  4. Tap Add Account.

Step 2 — Choose “Other” as the Account Type

  1. On the account-type list, scroll to the bottom and tap Other.
  2. Tap Add Mail Account.

Step 3 — Enter Your Account Details

On the New Account screen, fill in:

  • Name — the name your recipients will see (for example, “Jane Smith”).
  • Email — your full email address (for example, yourname@usgo.net).
  • Password — your email account password.
  • Description — a label for the account (for example, “Work Email”). This is what appears in your account list.

Tap Next in the upper-right corner.

Step 4 — Enter the Server Settings

At the top of the next screen, make sure IMAP is selected (not POP).

Incoming Mail Server

  • Host Name: mail.usgo.net
  • User Name: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password

Outgoing Mail Server

  • Host Name: mail.usgo.net
  • User Name: your full email address
  • Password: your email account password

Even though iOS labels the outgoing User Name and Password as “Optional,” you must fill them in — otherwise sending mail will fail.

Tap Next. iOS will verify the settings. This step can take a minute — please be patient.

Step 5 — Save the Account

  1. When verification finishes, you’ll see toggles for Mail and Notes. Leave Mail turned on. Notes can be left off unless you want to sync notes via this account.
  2. Tap Save in the upper-right corner.

Step 6 — Verify Encryption and Ports

iOS usually picks the correct ports and SSL settings, but it’s worth confirming them, especially if sending or receiving fails on the first try.

Check the incoming (IMAP) server:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts and tap the account you just added.
  2. Tap the account name (the entry with your email address near the top).
  3. Scroll down and tap Advanced.
  4. Confirm:
    • Use SSL: On
    • Authentication: Password
    • Server Port: 993
  5. Tap the back arrow to return, then tap Done if prompted.

Check the outgoing (SMTP) server:

  1. From the same account screen, tap SMTP under Outgoing Mail Server.
  2. Tap the primary server (mail.usgo.net).
  3. Confirm:
    • Server: On
    • Use SSL: On
    • Authentication: Password
    • Server Port: 465
    • User Name and Password are filled in
  4. Tap Done.

Step 7 — Send a Test Message

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Tap your new account’s Inbox — messages should begin to load.
  3. Compose a test email to yourself (or to another address you can check) to confirm both sending and receiving are working.

Troubleshooting

“Cannot Get Mail” or “The user name or password for [account] is incorrect”

  • Double-check that your User Name is your full email address, not just the part before the @.
  • Confirm your password by signing in to webmail. If webmail works but iOS doesn’t, the password is correct and the issue is in iOS’s settings.
  • In Advanced, confirm Use SSL is on, Authentication is Password, and the port is 993.

“Cannot Send Mail” / message stays in Outbox

  • Re-check the SMTP settings in Step 6. The most common cause is a missing User Name and Password on the outgoing server.
  • Confirm Use SSL is on and the port is 465.
  • Some cellular carriers or Wi-Fi networks block port 465. If you suspect this, try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular to confirm. Contact our support team if the issue persists.

Server certificate warning (“Cannot Verify Server Identity”)

  • Confirm the host name is spelled correctly (mail.usgo.net). If it is, tap Continue or Details → Trust to accept the certificate.

Mail keeps asking for your password

  • Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts, tap your account, and re-enter the password in both the incoming and outgoing (SMTP) sections.

Sent messages, drafts, or deleted mail aren’t syncing

  • In Advanced for your account, scroll to Mailbox Behaviors and make sure Drafts Mailbox, Sent Mailbox, Deleted Mailbox, and Archive Mailbox are mapped to the matching folders On the Server rather than On My iPhone/iPad.
