My Mailbox Was Hacked — What Happens Next?

What to do right away, and how we help you secure and restore your account.

If you notice unusual activity on your account — sent messages you didn't write, contacts saying they got strange emails from you, or you suddenly can't sign in — your mailbox may have been compromised. Here's exactly what to do, step by step.

Step 1 — Secure Your Account Right Away

  1. If you can still sign in, change your password immediately — see our article “How Do I Reset My Email Password?”.
  2. If you can't sign in, or you're not sure your account is fully secure, contact our support team right away. We'll change your password and log out every active session on the account for you.

Once your password is reset, sign back in at webmail.usgo.net with your new password.

Step 2 — We Reset Your Secret Questions Too

Changing your password alone isn't always enough — if an attacker also knows your secret questions, they could get back in using the “Forgot your Password” link. When you contact us about a compromised mailbox, we escalate internally to fully reset both your password and your secret questions, so the attacker is locked out for good.

You can review your account's security settings via the gear icon once you're back in.

Step 3 — Check for Anything the Attacker Left Behind

Attackers often set up hidden rules to forward your mail or hide their tracks. Once you're back in your account, please check:

  • Your Sent folder for anything you didn't send.
  • Your Filter Rules (gear icon → Mail → Filter Rules) for any rule you didn't create — especially ones that forward or delete mail.
  • Any new devices or apps listed under your account that you don't recognize.

Let us know if you find anything unfamiliar — we'll help you review it.

We'll Confirm Once You're Fully Restored

Once your password and secret questions are reset and we've confirmed nothing suspicious remains on the account, we'll let you know your mailbox is fully secured. If you have any doubts afterward, don't hesitate to reach back out — we're here to help.
